Artificial Intelligence: Important Info to Know

Artificial intelligence has become a serious topic of interest in recent years. AI systems are advancing at an unprecedented rate, and while it was originally thought that AI would be more prominent closer to the 2040s, we’re beginning to see more advanced AI systems that are being used for everyday tasks.

It’s believed that one day artificial intelligence will be an important part of our lives, and will likely be used as a powerful tool in a number of different professions. Keep reading to learn more about modern artificial intelligence and what it might mean for us in coming years.

    1. The Job Paradox

One of the biggest concerns with artificial intelligence is that it will begin taking away a lot of white collar jobs. This includes software developers, writers, accountants, and many more. It’s been speculated that within the United States, around 89 million jobs are going to be lost to AI over the next ten years.

At the same time, it’s also speculated that around 92 million jobs are going to be created in the same space of time, most of which will be related to AI. Right now, it’s not completely clear what’s going to happen and how it’s going to ultimately impact the job market.

    1. AI can’t Do Everything

It’s been a long-standing notion among the general population that artificial intelligence has the power to do just about everything, also known as, “AI Solutionism.” It’s the belief that an artificial intelligence system can do anything asked of it – essentially, to solve all of humanity’s problems. But this is far beyond the scope of artificial intelligence, at least not for a long time.

While the logical thinking of an AI system can certainly help us approach many of our current global issues, almost all of them will still need to be acted on and solved by us. We simply can’t rely on AI to fix all of the problems we are facing as a species, but in the meantime it could be useful to a freelance writer, or for someone wanting tips to enjoy pokies on Mac, as two examples.

    1. AI is Biased

Another downside to current iterations of AI systems is that there are inherent biases present in many of them. These biases are both intentionally and unintentionally added to the system by us because humans are inherently biased.

Because we are the ones that feed that data to the AI systems, many of our biases are added, too, which then shows up in the results that are generated by the AI. It’s important to remember that artificial intelligence has many limitations, despite it being an extraordinarily powerful system that could fundamentally change the world forever.

Artificial intelligence is already present in most areas of our lives, from the Netflix recommendations we get, to our insurers calculating risk. It will continue to become a more important part of the world, and many hope that it will lead humanity to a brighter future.
